Abstract

The framework of water bodies is an important tool for monitoring the water quality situation. Evaluating and informing the distance at which the main watercourses are in relation to the goals intended by the framework constitutes an efficient form of evaluation, but this approach is typically not utilized. This study proposes the use of the Framework Conformity Index (FCI) methodology, developed by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, to evaluate 172 stations in 19 river basins in Rio Grande do Sul from 2015 to 2022. The study considered 13 parameters defined in CONAMA Resolution No. 357/2005. The results indicate that water quality at 45% of the observed stations was "fair," followed by 41% "marginal," with compromised results due mainly to the parameters cadmium, E. coli, iron, phosphorus, manganese, and DO. The ECI proved to be a suitable tool for effectively informing managers and stakeholders about the condition of water bodies and for making comparisons between different basins.
