Abstract

Water quality indices are tools used to synthesize, through a single value, contributions of physical, chemical and biological variables of water bodies. Among the various tools available to assess water quality, the Water Quality Index (WQI) is one of the most used instruments. This work aims to identify, among the constituent parameters of the IQA, significant variables for optimizing the monitoring of the quality of water bodies, seeking reductions in parameters, time and cost for carrying out analyses. The data used include campaigns in 19 rivers that make up the Cachoeira River Basin in the northeast region of Santa Catarina (Brazil), from 2014 to 2021. Statistical tools such as principal component analysis, similarity analysis and multiple linear regression were used for analysis of experimental data. The results suggest dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, coliforms, phosphorus and turbidity as significant variables for monitoring. Generated mathematical models showed an average assertiveness of 81% when compared to the IQA. The proposal to reduce the variables suggested the feasibility of practical application, with reduced time and costs.

Também atuou como professor colaborador da Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina-UDESC. Tem experiência na área de Biotecnologia, com ênfase em biologia molecular e química de macromoléculas.
