Global climatic change will most likely affect naural resources and human conditions in semiarid regions.
This volume presents disciplinary as well as integrative methods to assess these impacts
considering the interactions betweeen climate variability and change, water availability, land use systems and quality of life.
Thaking the northeastern Brazilian states Ceará and Piauí as an example, a wide range of expertise and knowledge was compiled in order to understand
the complex relationship between natural and socioeconomic systems.
Tools to integrate this knowledge and make it available for the strategic planning of sustainable development are described.
The book is a summary of the main research results and the presentation given at the international conference of the WAVES Program on 25-26 June 2001 at Fortaleza (Brazil).
